The knee is the largest joint in the body and having healthy knees is required to perform most everyday activities. If knee of a person is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it may be hard for that person to perform simple activities, such as walking or climbing stairs. One may even begin to feel pain while sitting or lying down. If nonsurgical treatments like medications and using walking supports are no longer helpful, one may consider total knee replacement surgery. Joint replacement surgery is a safe and effective procedure to relieve pain, correct leg deformity, and help to resume normal activities What is a total knee replacement? A total knee replacement is a surgical procedure whereby the diseased knee joint is replaced with artificial material. The knee is a hinge joint which provides motion at the point where the thigh meets the lower leg. The thighbone (or femur) abuts the large bone of the lower leg (tibia) at the knee joint. During a total knee replacement, the end of the femur bone is removed and replaced with a metal shell. The end of the lower leg bone (tibia) is also removed and replaced with a channeled plastic piece with a metal stem.
