Glaucoma

Glaucoma is relatively common, especially in older adults and can cause damage to the optic nerve if left untreated. Glaucoma is a disease of the eye in which fluid pressure within the eye rises; if left untreated, the patient may lose vision and even become blind. There is a small space in the front of the eye called the anterior chamber. Clear liquid flows in and out of the anterior chamber, this fluid nourishes and bathes nearby tissues. If a patient has glaucoma, the fluid drains too slowly out of the eye. This leads to fluid build-up, and pressure inside the eye rises.Unless this pressure is brought down and controlled, the optic nerve and other parts of the eye may become damaged, leading to loss of vision.

Trabeculectomy is a surgical operation which lowers the intraocular pressure inside the eye (IOP) in patients with glaucoma.This is achieved by making a small hole in the eye wall (sclera), covered by a thin trap-door in the sclera. The fluid inside the eye known as aqueous humour, drains through the trap-door to a small reservoir or bleb just under the eye surface, hidden by the eyelid. The trap-door is sutured in a way that prevents aqueous humour from draining too quickly. By draining aqueous humour the trabeculectomy operation reduces the pressure on the optic nerve and prevents or slows further damage and further loss of vision in glaucoma.
